HAVENING TECHNIQUES

havening techniques

At Alive Wellness in Central Hong Kong, we blend neuroscience, gentle touch and mind-body therapies to help you release stress, process trauma and re-centre your nervous system so you can feel safe, resilient and alive again. Our integrated approach looks at the whole person – physical, emotional and spiritual – rather than just managing symptoms.

The Havening Technique ® is a gentle, psychosensory approach that stands out for its neuroscience-informed foundation. Far more than a simple relaxation tool or “feel-good” method, it provides a quick, safe haven for the mind and body, offering genuine transformation by helping to reduce the emotional impact of distressing memories or stressors without requiring prolonged re-experiencing or detailed retelling of the trauma. This makes it heartwarming, accessible, and highly effective for people of all ages, from children to adults.

As the first Havening Trainer in Hong Kong and a certified practitioner, I am proud to serve as an ambassador for this powerful modality. At Alive Wellness, we are excited to introduce the Havening Technique as a powerful addition to our holistic wellness offerings. This gentle approach beautifully complements our existing programs in mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and stress management, empowering clients to achieve deeper emotional freedom and lasting resilience.

What is the Havening Technique?

Havening Techniques® combine soothing touch, known as “Havening Touch” (gentle stroking of the arms, face, or hands), with distraction, guided imagery and specific psychological protocols to help the brain “unhook” from distressing memories, fears and stress responses.

By calming key emotional centres in the brain, such as the amygdala, Havening supports the nervous system to move from fight-or-flight into a felt sense of safety and regulation.

During a session, we use light, reassuring touch on the arms, hands or face (either self‑applied or practitioner‑guided), paired with focused attention exercises, to create slow delta brain waves associated with deep calm and emotional reset. This combination can reduce the emotional charge around painful experiences, so clients often report feeling more neutral, spacious and grounded when they think about past events.

How Havening Touch Helps Across Time

  • Past (Re-encoding Trauma): Havening uses neuroplasticity to disrupt the neural pathways of traumatic memories, removing their emotional charge so they can be recalled without triggering fear or anxiety.
  • Present (Calming the System): It acts as a somatic tool to lower stress, anxiety, and cortisol levels, promoting immediate feelings of safety and calm. It helps to address phobias, stress, and PTSD.
  • Future (Building Resilience): By clearing old, limiting patterns, it empowers individuals to move past mental blocks, creating more freedom, confidence, and emotional balance.

Rooted in neuroscience, the technique is believed to generate delta brain waves (slow, healing oscillations associated with deep relaxation and recovery states). This neurochemical shift promotes the release of feel-good, calming substances like serotonin, oxytocin, and GABA, while supporting a process in reducing the emotional charge encoded in the amygdala (the brain’s fear and threat center).

Traumatic or stressful experiences would active and strengthen fear-based neural pathways, making reactions uncontrollable and intense. Havening helps remove ( depotentiate) these pathways, detaching overwhelming emotions from the memory itself, often leading to rapid, profound relief and empowerment.

Clients frequently describe it as past hurts are more unrelevant and blured , there are more inner peace.  The physical pain , such as discovering an inner safe space where anxiety, stress, or past hurts simply lose their power, fostering calm, self-compassion, and vitality.

Our History with Havening at Alive Wellness

Developed by New York-based Dr Ronald A. Ruden M.D., Ph.D and his brother Steven J. Ruden D.D.S., ICF/ACC., Havening draws from decades of research into trauma, addiction, brain function, and memory encoding. Dr. Ruden’s work, including his books The Craving Brain and When the Past is Always Present (2010), laid the groundwork, with the techniques formally emerging around 2010–2013.

Because Havening works with how memories and emotional responses are encoded in the brain, change can sometimes feel surprisingly fast and “sticky,” with benefits that continue to unfold after the session. It can be used as a stand-alone therapy, or integrated with physiotherapy, mindfulness, breathwork and other holistic treatments offered at Alive Wellness.

Who Can Benefit from Havening in Hong Kong?

In Hong Kong’s demanding environment, marked by intense work schedules, high performance expectations, urban pressures, family dynamics, and frequent emotional challenges, many people experience chronic stress, anxiety, burnout, or lingering emotional distress. The Havening Technique offers a gentle, neuroscience-backed path to restore inner balance, enhance resilience, and support the body’s natural capacity to heal and recalibrate.

This content-free approach (meaning it works effectively without requiring clients to disclose or revisit specific details of distressing events) prioritizes privacy, emotional safety, and client-centered care. Clients often feel empowered and secure throughout the process, as the focus remains on creating a profound sense of internal safety rather than prolonged narrative exploration.

Havening is particularly well-suited for:

  • Busy professionals seeking rapid stress relief and burnout recovery amid Hong Kong’s high-pressure careers and long hours
  • Individuals managing everyday anxiety, overwhelm, persistent worry, or adjustment difficulties in fast-paced city life
  • Those experiencing panic attacks or phobias, where quick depotentiation of fear responses can restore calm and confidence
  • People carrying distressing memories or emotional imprints from past events (e.g., relationships, loss, embarrassment, or shocks) that continue to trigger unwanted reactions
  • Clients addressing milder to moderate trauma or post-event distress (such as after accidents, health concerns, or life transitions), gently reducing emotional intensity without the need to relive details extensively
  • Students, parents, or young adults navigating exam pressure, family expectations, school-related stress, bullying, or developmental challenges
  • Children and teens (with gentle, age-appropriate adaptations) experiencing fears, emotional ups-and-downs, or everyday worries
  • Anyone pursuing proactive emotional wellness, building greater self-compassion, improved sleep, enhanced resilience, and peak performance in work, sports, public speaking, or creative endeavors

Suitable for all ages, from children to seniors, Havening’s simple, self-applicable nature makes it an accessible daily tool for ongoing stress management in Hong Kong lifestyles (e.g., during commutes, before meetings, or at home to unwind).
