Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling and Psychotherapy can be effective to help a wide range of mental health conditions:

What are counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. Counsellors and psychotherapists will work with you over a period of time to help you develop a better understanding of yourself and of others. The most common way of receiving therapy is where you and your therapist are alone together in the same room, but you can also receive individual therapy by telephone or online.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

CBT aims to help you change the way you think (cognitive) and what you do (behaviour). Rather than looking at past causes, it focuses on current problems and practical solutions. CBT can be helpful for depression, anxiety, stress, phobias, eating disorders and managing long term conditions.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

Unlike CBT, the goal of ACT is not to reduce the frequency or severity of unpleasant internal experiences. The goal is to reduce your struggle to do away with these experiences and increase involvement in meaningful life activities. ACT is sometimes referred to as a “third wave” or “new wave” psychotherapy.

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT)

Emotionally focused therapy is a structure-tested way with scientific basis and theory and it is an approach for working with couples, families and individuals that helps to create secure, resilient relationships. EFT works on an emotional level to evoke and shape potent new experiences. Counsellors will help you understand your own and others’ emotions, address any insecurities and conflicts, and learn to interact in a more responsive and emotionally connected way. It moves them into new behaviours and new ways of engaging their world.
