Have you ever experienced these feelings? A lingering aching that never goes away, a stabbing or acute pain, a scorching or tingling sensation. The prevalence of low back pain (LBP) has increased by 18 percent in the last ten years. When you experience chronic back pain, you may feel like you’re always in agony or that you’re waiting for the pain to go away. With more pain comes long term illness, making it difficult to live a quality life.

Back and neck pain is the number one complaint our clients have when they visit Alive Wellness for the first time and it appears to be a common occurrence in Hong Kong. According to medical studies, around 80% of people will experience back pain at some point during their lives. Low back pain can be caused by a variety of factors, the most common of which are back strain, poor posture and degenerative issues. Evidence has shown that physiotherapy is the first line of treatment recommended in treating physical pain.

What are the common causes of chronic back pain?

Chronic back pain symptoms usually develop gradually and last for longer than six weeks. Chronic pain isn’t usually caused by a single event or injury, and it also doesn’t go away or heal on its own without medical assistance. Many risk factors, such as lifestyle, trauma, degeneration, postural dysfunction, and occupational factors, have been discovered; however, up to 95% of back pain cases are non-specific. The common causes of back pain are discussed in the following:

Muscle deconditioning and sedentary lifestyle

Muscle deconditioning occurs when the muscles in your back lack the strength and stability to effectively support you, resulting in wear and tear over time. When workers lead a sedentary lifestyle or sit at a desk all day, they are more likely to be at risk of muscle atrophy. Due to a lack of physical activity, muscular tone deteriorates, and the back muscles are unable to sustain the weight as well as they could.  The muscular system is made up of many muscle types, each of which plays an important role in the body’s function. Active support of muscles plays a big part in preventing degeneration.

Poor posture

Slouching and looking down at your phone while gazing forward and down encourages a tired posture that unbalances the spine and puts strain on the back muscles. A herniated disk can happen anywhere along the spine, but it most commonly happens in the lower back. A bulging, protruding, or ruptured disk is another name for it. It’s one of the most common causes of lower back pain. Your hip flexors might contract if you sit at your computer for long periods of time without stretching. This can weaken the hips and hamstrings over time, resulting in slouching posture.

When the herniation presses on a nerve, it causes pain that spreads or radiates to other parts of the body.

Traumatic events / injuries

Car accidents, sports injuries, fall accidents, and other high-impact incidents can hasten the aging process of the spine and worsen chronic pain when strengthening and conditioning is not properly managed after injuries. Because of the damage, these occurrences may promote overcompensation in movement, leading to potential muscle imbalance and joint degeneration.

Relieving your back pain

Physiotherapy is a treatment that helps to improve the movement and function of joints and muscles, known for relieving physical pain. It can help to reduce back pain and provide manual therapy, education on posture to optimize physical performance.

Exercises to develop flexibility, strengthen your back and abdominal muscles, and improve posture can be offered by a physiotherapist. The application of these procedures on a regular basis can help prevent discomfort from returning. They will also educate clients on how to adapt motions during a back pain episode to avoid flare-ups of pain while staying active.

Acupuncture is one of the most common non-pharmacological pain-relieving methods for back pain. This is owing to the fact that it has minimal side effects and is cost-effective. Acupuncture treatment helps enhance the body’s natural healing mechanisms and promotes both physical and mental wellness because it improves energy and restores biochemical balance. It stimulates the central nervous system, causing the release of feel-good chemicals like endorphins and serotonin into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain of the patient.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy has a number of potential health benefits for people who suffer from back pain, such as reduced muscle tension, improved circulation and blood flow, and higher endorphin levels.
